Hand Tattoos: Essential Care & Longevity Guide

Getting a tattoo on any of these spots is a bold and beautiful choice, but it requires a different level of commitment than other areas of the body. Because these areas are unique, these are considered high-maintenance tattoos.

Before you get your tattoo we require you fully understand everything regarding tattoos in these specialized areas, please review this guide to understand how hand tattoos age and our policy regarding their upkeep.

The Reality of Tattoos at these locations

The skin in this area is constantly moving, stretching, and being exposed to the elements. Unlike a tattoo on your forearm or shoulder, these type of tattoo deals with:

  • Constant Friction: Washing your hands, putting clothing on, using tools, and even putting hands in your pockets causes the skin to shed and regenerate faster.

  • Sun Exposure: Hands are rarely covered, leading to faster fading from UV rays.

  • Healing Challenges: Because you use your hands for everything, it is much harder to keep the area sterile and still during the initial healing phase.

Due to these factors, it is very common for ink to "fall out" or fade unevenly during the first few weeks. Expect that your tattoo will eventually need a touch-up to maintain its crispness.

Touch-Up Policy

Because hand tattoos are subject to wear and tear beyond the artist's control, our standard "Free Touch-Up" policy does not apply to this area.

  • No Free Touch-Ups: We do not offer complimentary touch-up services for tattoos on the fingers, palms, or backs of the hands.

  • Discuss Pricing Upfront: If your tattoo requires a "refresh" or a touch-up later on, there will be a service fee. We strongly encourage you to discuss these potential costs with your artist before you begin the tattoo.

  • Artist Rates: Touch-up pricing is at the discretion of the individual artist and is usually based on the time and materials required.

How to Protect Your Investment

To minimize the need for frequent touch-ups, follow these rules strictly:

  1. Keep it Clean: Use a mild, fragrance-free soap, but do not soak your hands in water (no dishes or long baths) for at least two weeks.

  2. Avoid Friction: Wear loose sleeves and try to limit heavy manual labor while the skin is peeling.

  3. Sun Protection: Once fully healed, always apply SPF 50+ to your hands when outdoors to prevent the ink from blurring.
